The National Commission of Telecommunications in Venezuela, Conatel, demanded Galaxy Entertainment, better known as Directv, to stop airing telenovelas that foment narcotrafficking such as, “La Reina del Sur.” The Telemundo TV series was just 3 days away from making its Venezuelan debut when Conatel released a press communicate prohibiting its transmission.
According to William Castillo, CEO of Conatel, television and film productions developed around these contents “glorify the life of people involved in narcotraffic and promote values that go against the Venezuelan family.” Included in the communicate, addressed to Directv’s CEO Alexander Elorriaga, is a reminder of the many times the satellite television company has been warned about the regulation of their content.
The Commission also asked Directv to considerate the inclusion of shows that “contribute to the formation of the citizens, democracy, human rights, peace, culture, education and health of Venezuelans.” An idea previously mentioned by Venezuela’s late President Hugo Chávez, who encouraged networks to produce “telenovelas socialistas.”
The star of the show, Kate Del Castillo, took to social media to express her opinion about Venezuela’s decision. Del Castillo, who has proven to have a very opinionated mind and has “no pelos en la lengua,” surprised her followers with a simple “Sin Palabras” and asked her fans to share their thoughts on her personal Instagram account.
