Vance Refuses to Rule Out Recession As Concerns Over Market Slump Intensify: 'You Can Never Predict the Future'

Vice President JD Vance declined to rule out the possibility of a recession, stating that "you never can predict the future," as concerns grow following a significant stock market slump.

On Thursday, the vice president appeared on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle," where host Laura Ingraham pressed him on whether the administration could guarantee the U.S. would avoid a recession.

"But can you rule out the possibility — as Reagan faced in his first term in office, coming off a terrible economic calamity for the country — can you rule out a recession, even a temporary one?" Ingraham asked.

Instead of providing reassurance, Vance echoed President Donald Trump's rhetoric, defending the use of tariffs to incentivize American manufacturing and shift production away from China. He blamed the previous Biden administration for leaving behind economic instability and high deficits.

"Well, look, I — I think you — you never can predict the future, but I think the economy, the fundamentals of the economy are actually quite strong right now. And we'll see how this unfolds, Laura," Vance said.

The stock market took a sharp hit earlier this week after Trump repeatedly refused to rule out an economic recession, fueling investor fears, Mediaite reported.

On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped over 1,000 points before closing at -890 points, with losses continuing throughout the week. Trump's trade policies, particularly his emphasis on tariffs, have added to economic uncertainty, leading to concerns about long-term investment stability.

Vance's noncommittal response is likely to further unsettle investors already spooked by Trump's comments earlier in the week.

"What the president is doing is changing four years of a failed bipartisan consensus in Washington, D.C. that has sold out American workers and destroyed the underlying economic strength of the United States of America," Vance said. "We're going to rebuild it. It's going to take a little time but we are going to do it."
