A Utah teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a student was formally charged Friday. Courtney Louise Jarrell, 22, a teacher at Riverton High School resigned Friday as well. Jarrell also coached the girls' basketball team in addition to being a mathematics teacher.
Jarrell's attorney said that her resignation was not an admission of guilt but rather an avenue for her to focus on her defense, as she will plead not guilty according to the Washington Post. The Jordan School District suspended Courtney Jarrell in March after the first reports of inappropriate activity arose. The teacher is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl at Jarrell's house sometime in March or prior.
A student, Kathryn Orchard, told the KLS news affiliate that Jarrell was "loved" by everyone at the school, "My parents were even shocked because [they] loved her too. They thought she was a great teacher," Orchard said. A May court proceeding is pending.
