A Utah hospital placed newborn twins on their mother who tragically passed away from a rare heart condition just nine days after giving birth so they could say goodbye.

Morgan Hughes, 23, who always dreamed of being a mother, delivered her twins, Hudson and Georgia, on Dec. 19, 2024, six weeks prematurely, according to NBC News.

Despite a smooth delivery, Morgan, diagnosed late in her pregnancy with pre-eclampsia, later experienced symptoms of postpartum cardiomyopathy—a rare and often undetectable heart condition that weakens the heart muscle.

The condition affects about 1 in 2,000 live births and can mimic normal pregnancy symptoms, making early detection difficult.

Morgan was readmitted to Utah Valley Hospital after fainting and experiencing cardiac complications, where doctors diagnosed fluid buildup around her heart.

On Dec. 28, despite intensive care, she passed away. In her final moments, hospital staff brought her premature twins from the NICU to be placed in her arms, giving the family a poignant chance to say goodbye.

"It was kind of both a nice image to remember, but a hard image to think about," Hughes' father, Brian Hodson, told the outlet. "It was really sweet, but devastating."

The twins remain in the NICU but are expected to be released soon.
