Shots were fired on Tuesday at the USC School of Public Health, according to the institution’s official emergency service, Carolina Alert. Two are reported dead in the incident. Reporter Hannah Jeffrey of The Daily Gamecock reported that have been canceled. Traffic was shut down, and a SWAT reportedly responded to the incident. "Armed with AR-15s, moved students across Assembly Street from the school of public health," reported The State, a local newspaper.
South Carolina Law-Enforcement official Thom Berry said that authorities are investigating a possible murder-suicide. It's unclear if one or both of the dead are USC students, but the which may have taken inside one of the buildings. Authorities will say that they will not identify victims or the shooter in the incident until tomorrow. The Columbia Police Department said through it’s official twitter feed that the USC shooting appeared to be an isolated incident.
Today’s shooting is one of many tragedies that have hurt South Carolina college students in recent years, including the University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University. A drive-by-shooting at Halloween party at USC left three injured in 2012. At South Carolina State, A 19-year-old man was charged with murdering fellow classmate Brandon Robinson in January of 2014. It’s been reported that 1 in 4 campus police are not prepared to handle an active shooter.
