The United States is not buying Russia’s claims that a potential Ukraine invasion is not happening. This was after the Kremlin claimed that some of its forces have returned to base.
Rather, the US urges everyone not to let their guard down. They are rejecting the said claims and a Ukraine invasion is still possible.
Backing this claim is that a senior official said on Wednesday that Russia has amassed another 7,000 Russian troops at the Ukraine border in recent days, CNN reported.
"Every indication we have now is they mean only to publicly offer to talk, and make claims about de-escalation, while privately mobilizing for war," the official said.
Hence, the US is continuing to crank up its information campaign to maintain pressure on Vladimir Putin, not to mention urge its allies that the threat is still there and potentially imminent.
However, it appears some people inside Washington feel otherwise. Some feel that Putin is unlikely to invade at any time. So it will be interesting how Biden can uphold his belief that an invasion will happen.
It should be noted that the US and Russia have nuclear powers that could prove disastrous. Although both nations have been reportedly negotiating, both remain far apart from Putin’s demands to rip up existing security arrangements in Eastern Europe with the departure of NATO troops from former Warsaw Pact nations.
Also, the current moves of the US and Biden could be detrimental. There is a chance that Putin may be pushed over the edge if negotiations continue without progress. It also gives the Russian leader all the reason to launch an invasion which most fear.
Hence, it has become a game of chicken for both Russia and the US. Other countries have been latched on to the row and the aftermath could be catastrophic. Ukraine will be the most devastated. With little to no progress, happening expect things to get antsier in the coming days.
