Comedy is a serious business, FYI. More so, if it’s a gig by stand-up guy Pete Holmes. Holmes, who recently made headlines for losing his cool (almost) on Barack Obama’s elder daughter Malia, buried his face on the big reveal during late-night host Conan O’Brien’s radio show on Thursday.
“Who let you put a curtain around President Obama’s daughter?”, O’Brien asked Holmes on the show. “Why weren’t you shot?”, he added. Playing along, Holmes responded as to why the Secret Service didn’t barge in to gun him down. “I should have been shot…I’ve never gotten off stage and been like, ‘Why wasn’t I shot?’”
Throwing in a bit of context, Holmes, the star and creator of HBOs “Crashing” was at play—waiting for his turn to stand-up— during a recent show at the Comedy Studio in Somerville, Mass., near Boston. Just as he prepped for his turn, Holmes observed two young women whispering all through. So much so, it felt “worse than heckling”.
One of the women in question was former President Barack Obama’s eldest daughter, who’s currently in her third year at Harvard University. Malia dropped by with a friend and she seemed quite low-key. Low key enough to trick Holmes into believing that she was just another pretty face in a pool of wide-eyed comedy enthusiasts.
Elaborating how he went about the whole thing, just to remind the women to keep it low, Holmes added, “I just go, ‘What’s going on? I can see you. Please stop. Please cut it out.’” This startled O’Brien as much as it did to the listeners who tuned in. “Look at my face, I’m here to help,” he quipped. “But you know you push Petey too far. I’m like, ‘Please shut the [expletive] up.’”
Needless to say, the awkwardness had gone a little too far. But, Holmes didn’t stop at that and went on to reveal that he did try to cover them with a curtain so he wouldn’t have to see them, thinking the act would amass “a big laugh.”
Strangely, the whole audience turned on him. Holmes had no idea what was going on and showed no mercy nevertheless. Needless to say, the man is really embarrassed. But, is he regretful? Well, that’s a story for another day!
