With the 2014 World Cup drawing closer and closer, multiple teams across the international soccer spectrum are making their final preparations for crucial playoffs that will ultimately determine a place in the 32-team tournament. While the opening leg of the CONCACAF/OFC World Cup Playoff between Mexico and New Zealand will certainly be worthy of attention, the upcoming showdown between Jordan and Uruguay in the AFC/CONMEBOL group of FIFA should also provide loads of entertainment for even the smallest of soccer fans.
Uruguay did not perform to the best of their abilities in South American qualifying and as they prepare for a tough two-leg playoff against an emotionally high Jordan team, each player on the club knows what they need to do in order to secure a place at next summer's World Cup in Brazil. The Uruguayan nationals earned a fourth place finish at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and with a slew of talent on the roster including Liverpool star scorer Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and captain Diego Lugano, Los Charruas is certainly capable of playing better than they did in the qualifying stages.
Suarez will surely be a big part of any success Uruguay hopes to have since he is seen as one of the premier scorers in the sport. Heading into the playoff, the 26-year-old has already recorded eight goals for Liverpool in Premier League action, keeping his club in contention in the always-competitive BPL. Excited about the opportunity to return to the World Cup, Luis Suarez also noted that Jordan is not to be taken lightly. "Jordan will be very motivated to play us, just as teams are when they meet us in the World Cup and the Copa America," Suarez said recently. "We have to be careful. We know Jordan have fast outfield players and if you leave space, they could show their quality."
While Uruguay hopes for vast improvement on the pitch, Jordan is interested in making history of their own. The Middle-Eastern squad has never reached the World Cup and now that they're only two legs away from what would be a truly remarkable accomplishment, head coach Hossam Hassan understands that his team is the last Arab squad representing Asia and he hopes his club embraces the idea that a complete effort could earn the team a World Cup berth once the two legs are complete.
"Jordan are the last Arab team representing Asia," he said. "It's an Arab effort and not a Jordanian effort."
Hassan and Jordan used a penalty shoot-out victory in the Asian Football Confederation playoffs against Uzbekistan to reach this stage. Now prepared for another and highly important playoff, Jordan hopes they're able to put on a repeat performance in order to etch an unbelievable moment in international soccer history.
