Uruguay and Ecuador will square off nearly two miles in the air on Friday as Ecuador hosts its rivals in Quito in a crucial game for both teams. Fifth-ranked Uruguay is on level with fourth-ranked Ecuador, with 22 points each, and both teams are eyeing the final qualifying position for the 2014 World Cup. Uruguay will try to stage a repeat of its dramatic 2-1 win in 2009 in Quito, which ruined Ecuador's hopes of a playoff place in the 2010 World Cup. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez had a big hand in that 2009 victory, when he knocked in an equalizing goal, and he's played a key part in this year's campaign. After a slow start in this year's qualifiers, they come into Friday having won three straight over Venezuela, Peru and Colombia, and Suarez told Yahoo! Sports that he was confident that his squad could extend that win streak to four at Atahualpa Stadium. "We've won our last three games well and we're in good shape," he said, adding, "We have to be smart and control the tempo, and not play so fast because they are much more used to playing at altitude...Playing in Quito is difficult and we are aware of what is at stake. We can't afford to be complacent. We're winning and doing things well but we can't take anything for granted."
Much is on the line for both teams today. If either one of them lose this and their next game, Venezuela (which has 19 points) could sneak up from behind to secure the last spot in Rio de Janeiro. But Ecuador's schedule in the last week of the qualifiers looks a bit tougher, as they'll have to head to Chile to take on a potent Chilean squad. Uruguay, on the other hand, will be at home against Argentina, who's sitting pretty after having already qualified and who will be playing without Lionel Messi or Gonzalo Higuain.
Ecuador has six wins to their name, but they haven't been able to get a win their last four qualifiers. At the moment they lead Uruguay by no more than a goal differential. A crucial player in their hopes against their South American rivals will be Felipe Caicedo, who's scored six goals this qualifying season. Other key players include Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia and Jefferson Montero.
