Uruguayan senator Jorge Saravia has been injured in a robbery at his home. The senator, who will run in the 2014 presidential election, sustained head injuries after being beaten with a gun when three assailants entered his home. The attack took place on Monday night when the three attackers forced their way into the 55-year-old's home in Montevideo. Shots were also fired at the senator's 25-year-old daughter, however she was not injured in the attack.
Jorge Saravia, a member of the opposition National Party, told how the incident occurred while he was dining at home with his daughter and wife. "They split my skull open when they whacked me over the head with a pistol butt," Mr Saravia told local media. "We had a hand-to-hand combat and exchanged fire. They shot at my daughter, they took aim and shot from a distance of only 2m (6.5ft), but luckily they missed," Mr Saravia said. "The shoot-out carried on until we ran out of bullets."
Mr Saravia, announced that he would be running for Uruguay's presidency in October 2014 for the opposition National Party.
