A police officer in Nigeria, protesting the abandonment of his wife, went on a shooting spree in his workplace killing at least six of his colleagues. Several other officers, including the shooter’s father-in-law, were injured in the tragedy.

Sergeant Bello went berserk inside the police college quarters of Borno Police headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State on Wednesday, March 2.

Among several other injured officers was Bello’s father-in-law, Inspector John Kande.

On that fateful day, the police sergeant was reportedly upset after his wife left him for reasons undisclosed.

"He and his wife have been having issues for some time now; we tried to settle it amicably, but he refused," a family source, who did not want to be identified, told Dailytrust.

"The wife told her parents that the sergeant assaulted her; she moved her things out of his house. The wife left due to severe maltreatment by her husband."

The police sergeant then reportedly stormed his in-law’s home, accusing them of planning to marry off their daughter to another man.

Inspector Kande pleaded with his angry son-in-law to wait for the mother of his wife to return home to resolve the misunderstanding.

But the police sergeant, it was learned, left furious and reported to work that morning.

Like every other policeman, Sergeant Bello signed for his rifle and went to his duty post. However, everything changed forever that day.

The police sergeant went straight to the Commandant’s Market in the barracks and opened fire randomly at people wining and dining there.

"He started shooting and threatened to kill everyone. Unfortunately, he shot people, but six mobile policemen died and two others are currently receiving treatment at Specialist Hospital," the source said.

Sergeant Bello then marched with his gun to his father-in-law’s duty post and opened fire at the officers there, until he ran out of bullets.

Inspector Kande was shot in the leg and managed to escape the massacre.

Sergeant Bello was not done. He went to his in-law’s apartment and set it on fire. The blaze affected three other apartments.

"He razed down two blocks of eight rooms in the process and also shot his father-in-law," the source told the local news station.

Sergeant Bello is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID as an investigation into the tragedy continues.
