As recent layoffs continue rocking Univision, the network is charging into 2025 with new formats. The media giant is revamping its programming lineup by launching its first-ever original true crime series. In a surprising move, the 10 p.m. slot—traditionally reserved for telenovelas—will now feature investigative journalism.

What's the show about?

Titled 'Código de Investigación', the show will be hosted by Spanish journalist Borja Voces. Alongside a team of experts, Voces will delve into both past crimes and ongoing investigations.

Known for his work on 'Primer Impacto' and 'Noticiero Univision Edición Digital', Voces emphasized that he won't be tackling the stories alone.

"I'll be joined by a team of experts—criminologists, police officers, mental health specialists, and forensic analysts. Together, we'll uncover key details about each case," he said.

The show promises live updates, exclusive interviews with key characters in the cases investigated, and cutting-edge technology to analyze evidence. Voces' reputation for storytelling and empathy is expected to resonate deeply with viewers.

A bold move for Univision

Launching Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10 p.m., 'C.D.I.' will air live Monday through Friday and seek to captivate audiences with gripping stories and in-depth crime analysis.

With this new format Univision is strategically shifting away from telenovelas during prime time, focusing instead on broader content to attract a diverse audience.

While true crime has long been a staple on English-language networks with programs like '20/20' and 'Deadline', 'C.D.I.' is the first Spanish-language production dedicated to forensic analysis and real-life investigations.

Past Spanish-language shows, such as 'Mujeres Asesinas' and 'Mujer, casos de la vida real' hosted by the late Silvia Pinal, dramatized real-life cases. However, 'C.D.I.' is breaking new ground with a fact-based, investigative documentary approach.

Univision is looking to dominate the 10 p.m. slot, which has proven challenging when rival network Telemundo airs crime dramas about drug lords and criminal empires, a topic that consistently attracts viewers like a moth to a flame.

'C.D.I.' will go head-to-head with 'La Jefa', starring Fabiola Guajardo and Iván Arana (best known for 'El Señor de los Cielos') on the evening of January 14, with the battle for ratings set to be a fierce one.
