A 32-year-old man beat his elderly father to death with an iron rod after he refused to give him money to buy alcohol.
The son, identified as S. Karthik, a resident of Aanaikuppam in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, India was arrested on Monday, Oct.18, and charged with the murder of his 76-year-old father, P. Subramanian, a retired deputy collector.
The shocking murder came to light after the accused contacted an agency in the town to supply a freezer box to keep the body. Upon arrival, the agency staff noticed several bleeding injuries on the elderly man’s body and alerted the police.
Officers from the Cuddalore police station were dispatched to the scene. The police located the victim’s body and arrested the suspect without incident, according to reports.
According to the police, the suspect, an unemployed engineering graduate with an MBA degree was reportedly an alcohol addict.
He had been working with a cell phone company in Chennai. He resigned from his job one and a half years ago and since then had been living with his father, police said.
The deceased man, a retired deputy collector had been living alone after his wife’s death, eight years ago.
The accused frequently demanded money from his father to buy liquor and often engaged in fights with him whenever he refused.
On Monday, during one such heated argument, the accused grabbed an iron rod and hit his father several times, police said.
Subramanian sustained several injuries and died on the spot.
During a search of the home, the investigators found Karthik's shabby room filled with hundreds of empty liquor bottles and cigarette packets, and leftover food items.
They noted that the room had not been cleaned for several weeks.
The septuagenarian’s body was recovered from the crime scene and sent to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital for autopsy.
Karthik currently remains in judicial custody. A further probe is underway.
In a similar but unrelated incident, 31-year-old Sachin Kulte, a resident of a township on Abhinav college road, in Narhe, Pune, India is accused of killing his 60-year-old mother, Vimal Dattopanth Kulte at their home after she allegedly refused to fund his drinking habits.
The incident came to light after the victim’s 44-year-old daughter filed a police complaint accusing her brother of murdering their mother. She told the police that her brother came to her home and informed her about their mother’s death, but did not reveal how she had died.
He is remanded to police custody on Sunday, Oct.17, according to the police.
