Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed his people on Friday about the ongoing investigation the Ukrainian government is doing after being able to reclaim some parts of the Kharkiv region from Russians, specifically the city of Izium.
Zelensky said indications of torture and “humiliating treatment of people” are evident. He said evidence of Russian soldiers shooting lifeless people just for fun and civilians of the then-occupied city and towns were found inside torture chambers.
Foreigners were also found inside including seven citizens of the Republic of Sri Lanka, students of the Kupyansk Medical College in particular.
They were said to be captured by the Russian military back in March and kept them since inside a basement and were just found after being liberated from the opposing country.
“The world must react to all this. Russia has repeated in Izium what it did in Bucha. And now we have just begun to learn the full truth about what was happening in Kharkiv region at that time,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president promised to allow journalists full access to all retaken territories where abuses allegedly transpired in order to give the world a closer and more detailed picture of what has been going on in the country.
The United Nations has already confirmed it will provide a group of employees who will help Izium City recover from the remnants of war and its captivity.
Furthermore, Zelensky thanked their partners, dignitaries, and “ordinary people” who have been part of the “fight for justice.”
“I thank all our partners, all leaders and just our ordinary people who help fight for justice. Fight for the official recognition of Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia for this terror.”
He mentioned that he had spoken to the President of Finland and thanked them for their support, as well as representatives of Nike who made the decision to leave the Russian market which Zelensky called “the right decision.”
