In what will certainly be one of the premier match-ups of college football's Week 8, No. 9 UCLA will travel to No. 13 Stanford in a game that will have definite BCS implications. Stanford is glad to be back home following an upset loss at Utah a week ago and as they enter their next contest with an overall record of 5-1 (3-1 Pac-12 North), the Cardinal hope to get back on track against a very talented and undefeated UCLA Bruins team.
Led by sophomore quarterback Brett Hundley (109-160, 1,469 yds, 12 TD) and a stout defense, the Bruins hope to catapult themselves further up the national rankings with the hopes that continued success could lead to a possible discussion for a BCS National Championship appearance. The Bruins will undoubtedly have their chances to stake their claim in the coming weeks since they'll travel to No. 2 Oregon in one week while still having to take on No. 20 Washington, Arizona State and USC. Not wanting to get too far ahead, Bruins head coach Jim Mora says the key to future success starts with a win over Stanford, a team that his squad lost to twice last year.
"I think you have to be careful when you make it about redemption," Mora said. "Then you start to get emotional. It has to be about us. We have goals and expectations. We want to play with emotion but not be emotional. They beat us twice last year, including in the Pac-12 championship game. When those things become a factor, I think you are making a mistake. Stanford is an outstanding football team."
Despite the 27-21 to Pac-12 rival Utah, Stanford and head coach David Shaw remain confident in their ability to bounce back in front of what will surely be a raucous home crowd.
"The first word I used is perspective,'' Shaw said. "Let's look at where we are. Let's look at how we got here. Let's look at where we're going. That's the most important thing for me. In order to really go forward, you have to look at where you are."
