Police responded early Monday to reports of a shooting on the University of Central Florida campus. En route to investigate a 12:20 a.m. fire alarm call at UCF, they were informed of a man with a gun in the Tower 1 dormitory.
Upon investigation of the UCF building, authorities encountered a man dead of an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound and an IED or improvised explosive device. Over 500 students were evacuated from the building as well as a nearby parking deck. The Orange County Bomb Squad was called in to investigate the explosive device. UCF announced classes would be canceled until noon local time Monday because of the incident.
The shooter is an unidentified male and authorities do not know whether the man is a student at UCF. Police would not release whether there was a motive for the shooting or a reason for the existence of the explosive device.
Students and faculty were concerned about the immediate safety of those on campus.
"It's unnerving, for sure," one unidentified woman told the local CBS affiliate. "Definitely not used to it, especially living on campus."
However, the administration told authorities it was likely an isolated incident.
"We don't believe there is any imminent threat to the campus," UCF spokesman Grant Heston said.
CORRECTION: This article incorrectly stated that reports of a shooting took place at the University of Southern Florida. The events took place at the University of Central Florida.
