Actor Tyler Perry has come forward to carry the expenses of the funeral of Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old black man who was killed in an encounter with the Atlanta police on June 12. Perry has also taken it upon himself to ensure that Brooks' four children get proper college educations and thus will be paying for it as well.
Brooks, survived by his wife Tomika Miller, has four children- Blessing, 8, Memory, 2, Dream 1, and stepson Mekai, 13- and as shared by a source close to Perry, he "wanted to do something to help" the family.
"His heart goes out to the family during this tragic time," the source added.
Since George Floyd’s murder triggered the Black Lives Matter movement, many celebrities have come forward to voice their support. Just before Rayshad Brooks’ shocking death added the racial unrest, Tyler had extended his support to the revolutionary movement.
"I spent the past few days with an extremely heavy heart, having very high-level conversations with people who don't look like me, people who may not believe what I believe, people who don't know what it's like to be Black in America but were willing to listen...white people who are Republicans and Democrats, with different opinions, different views, and different ideas and strategies on how to stop this! White people with the power to have this go either way," he wrote on Facebook.
“I must say that it's a gift to be able to pick up the phone and actually talk to people who can help effect change. THERE IS POWER IN TALKING TO THE OTHER SIDE! THERE IS POWER IN BEING HEARD! That's where change lives! Change lives in the galvanization of all races, not in the division of us,” he had further added.
As per reports, Brooks’ was shot when the police, on receiving a complaint that a man (Brooks) was asleep in his car parked in the drive-thru, arrived at Wendy’s parking lot in Atlanta. After Brooks resisted arrest, an officer tried to taser him. In the struggle that ensued, Brooks was fatally shot and succumbed to his injuries while he was in the hospital.
