Three people were reportedly killed after the vehicle they were riding fell off a cliff during an off-roading tour of Colorado’s the San Juan Mountains on Monday.
The individuals were identified as tourists Diana Robles and Ofelia Figueroa-Perez. The third casualty was the driver, identified as Don Fehd.
According to the Ouray County Plaindealer, Fehd worked for the Colorado West Jeep Rentals and Tours, and the 72-year-old had a quirky and genuine way with passengers.
On Monday, the three were riding a 2022 Jeep Gladiator that somehow drifted off the edge of Ouray County Road 361 and landed hundreds of feet below, the Montrose Daily Press reported.
The vehicle first fell 100 feet to the bottom of a cliff. Not long after, it allegedly rolled 140 feet down a rocky embankment and ejected Fehd.
The bodies of Robles and Figueroa-Perez were later found still in the vehicle that ended up resting on its roof near the bank of a creek according to authorities.
Robles was reportedly a nurse at the Yuma Regional Hospital and had just taken a photo of the Imogene Pass - a “thrilling” trail that is the second-highest drivable pass in Colorado.
The other female victim, Figueroa-Rose, also worked as a nurse according to a relative on social media.
“We know they are in the merciful hands of our Lord as they themselves being nurses had healing hands in every life they touched,” Diana Figueroa wrote.
It was the second accident in the area in just a week. On Sept. 5, a man from Arizona and his wife died when their ATV rolled hundreds of feet near Imogene Pass.
According to Ouray County Coroner Colleen Hollenbeck, a friend of Robles was waiting for her to call with details about how her trip went. When no call came, this was when she became concerned. After seeing the social media post, she immediately touched base with Hollenbeck.
