On Saturday, a young man attempted to kill himself by going into the lions’ den at the Metropolitan Zoo in Santiago de Chile. In order to protect the man, the two lions inside had to be killed.
The 20-year-old man, identified as Luis Ferranda, reportedly undressed himself and forged his way into the cage hoping to die. “The zoo has a very strict protocol because human lives are the most important to us,” zoo director, Alejandra Montalba, said. “Because of the fact that there are no tranquilizers that act immediately on animals, we had to sacrifice the lives of the lions in order to save the suicidal young man,” she added.
Montalba also said that they are “profoundly concerned” about the deaths of the two felines; a female and a male brought directly from Africa to Santiago de Chile.
The man reportedly had a suicide note in his clothes, where he confirmed his intentions of dying that day, at that zoo, and wrote several fanatic religious proclamations.
To make matters even worse, Metropolitan Park director Mauricio Fabry said that the young man is being treated at the nearby Clinica Indisa, but remains in critical condition, as the two lions did get to attack him.
Many told the horrific narration of events on social media, others spoke to the media and said a loud siren went off before they evacuated the area to begin the rescue, and others even got to take photos of the tragic incident.
