Two children were among the four people wounded in a shooting incident in Virginia Beach on Sunday night. The Virginia Beach Police Department said the shooting occurred on Whitney Court and left the victims with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the department responded to a 5:30 p.m. call reporting a shooting incident in the 3700 block of Whitney Court in Virginia Beach. When they arrived at the scene, they found two children under the age of 12 and two adults with gunshot wounds. The officers immediately transported the victims to local hospitals for treatments.
According to reports, the two adult victims were both moms worrying about the safety of their children’s safety. Natalie Carrion, who was at the Twin Canal Village Apartments in Virginia Beach when the shooting happened, said the entire year has been nothing but shootings and drive-by in the area. “I do not let my kids go outside at all,” she said. “At all. We have a play park in front of my house, I don’t even let them do that,” she added.
Another resident also said the apartment has been a hot spot for shootings. She recounted one night during the summer when she heard shots in the neighborhood and found a man who had been hit in her backyard as she looked out her window.
“The officers were coming up and telling us to back away and whatnot, but he was passed on,” she said. “After that, I had to help a guy out who came while I was walking out to my car asked for help, and I had to hold his bullet wounds while talking to the police,” she added.
Both residents agreed that the community lacks security, saying the gates do not even require codes and their security cameras do not work. “Something has to give,” said Carrion. “The community has to do something. The rental office has to put in their work. They have to do something to make this a safer environment for our children.”
Meanwhile, the Virginia Beach Police Department said the shooting scene remains “very active.” No further information is available yet on the victims and the suspect.
