Cemeteries in the Massachusetts cities of Boston and Cambridge are refusing to permit burial for the body of Boston Bomber suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The elder of the two brothers that set off bombs at the Boston Marathon was killed in a shootout with police April 19.
The body of Tsarnaev was released to a funeral home, the funeral Director Peter Stephan is having a difficult time finding a cemetery that will allow the body of the bombing suspect to be buried there. Originally Stephan reached out to cemeteries in the city of Boston. When they refused he reached out to the city of Cambridge.
Cambridge also refused to allow the body of Tsarnaev burial at any of their grave yards.
Cambridge City Manager Bob Healy gave a statement to the L.A Times saying,
"The difficult and stressful efforts of the citizens of the city of Cambridge to return to a peaceful life would be adversely impacted by the turmoil, protests, and widespread media presence at such an interment."
Healy added, "The families of loved ones interred in the Cambridge Cemetery also deserve to have their deceased family members rest in peace."
The L.A Times also pointed out examples of past terrorist activities on American soil where the bodies of suspects were not allowed burial by cemeteries.
The few bodies of 9/11 hijackers that were found were never buried but rather "languished in undisclosed locations after nobody claimed them."
The body of executed Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh was denied burial at Arlington National Cemetery despite his status as a veteran.
L.A Times reports that the widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Katherine Russell did not step forward to claim her husband's body. Katherine Russell is under investigation by the FBI. The Bureau is trying to figure out how much she knew about the bombings. As previously reported by the Latin Times, Katherine Russell is refusing to speak with the FBI while she mourns her husband.
USA Today says since Tsarneav's wife did not claim his body the task fell to an Uncle. Ruslan Tsarni is a Maryland resident. He arrived in Massachusetts to claim his nephew's body. Tsarni says he is only taking on the responsibility of finding a burial site for Tsarnaev because that is what Islamic tradition says.
"No one wants to associate their names with such evil events," Tsarni told USA Today. "I'm dealing with logistics. A dead person must be buried."
Tsarni has publically denounced the actions of his nephews. He said they brought shame to the family.
