Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster, who has been accused by multiple women of groping or inappropriate touching, will feature in former US President Donald Trump's rally in Nebraska.
The rally will be held in Greenwood, Nebraska, on April 29, which is less than two weeks before the primary election on May 10. Apart from Trump, Herbster is the only person so far slated to speak at the event, reported CNBC. On the announcement sent by Trump’s political action committee, Save America, on Tuesday morning, Herbster is described as a “special guest speaker.”
The rally announcement came just days after a Nebraska Examiner bombshell report was published. In the report several women, including a Republican state senator, accused Herbster of groping them during events in recent years. State Senator Julie Slama said that she was walking by the 67-year-old agricultural business executive when he reached up her skirt and touched her inappropriately. This was allegedly done without her consent in the middle of a crowded ballroom during a Republican Party dinner in 2019.
Six women accused him of grabbing their bottom over their clothes. He allegedly did so during greetings or while posing for photographs with him at beauty pageants or political events. Herbster reportedly cornered another woman and kissed her forcibly.
Herbster said in a statement last week that “these libelous accusations are 100% false.”
He even suggested that the report had been pushed by his political enemies, including current Governor Pete Ricketts. The Republican had come out against Trump’s endorsement of Herbster last fall.
Herbster said that he has "respected and empowered women" to run his company, farm, and now his campaign. He claimed that not once has his integrity ever "been challenged in this manner," and that it’s only after he had "threatened the stranglehold the establishment has on this state do they stoop to lies this large."
Ricketts has suggested Herbster should drop out of the race, saying "sexual assault is criminal behavior and should disqualify anyone from elected leadership," reported USA Today.
Last October, Trump had endorsed Herbster. At the time, the former President called him "a tremendous supporter of America First and Make America Great Again, right from the beginning."
