President Donald Trump reportedly uninvited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from a high-stakes Washington meeting Friday that could end Russia's war until French President Emmanuel Macron stepped in.
On Wednesday, U.S. officials abruptly canceled Zelensky's planned visit to Washington, even allegedly sending him a formal disinvitation. Zelensky turned to Macron, who reportedly personally lobbied Trump to reconsider. The effort paid off—Trump later confirmed the meeting was back on, diplomatic sources told French media outlet BFMTV.
The make-or-break gathering is expected to finalize a U.S.-brokered deal that offers the United States control over a vast share of Ukraine's mineral wealth in exchange for security guarantees and a peace deal with Russia.
As news of the Macron's actions spread to social media, some users began to celebrate the French president's work while slamming Trump.
"The U.S. almost ghosted Zelensky, but Macron saved the day. The 'Mineral Deal' is on, and Ukraine stays in the global game. Who's really calling the shots?" one X user wrote.

Who’s really calling the shots?
"Is Macron likely to be the next leader of the free world?" another added.

As part of a proposal, Ukraine would agree to joint development of critical resources, including oil and gas—an offer Zelensky initially was not too fond of. After mounting pressure from Trump and U.S. officials, Kyiv reconsidered.
However, tensions are still boiling. Trump recently called Zelensky a "dictator without elections," and continues to grill Europe to take more responsibility for Ukraine's security. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested Ukraine should show "gratitude" for Washington's support. Trump has also warned Ukraine to "forget" about joining NATO.
Meanwhile, Trump has refused to call Putin a dictator. The U.S. also abstained from a UN vote Monday that officially labeled Russia the aggressor in the war.
