A Wisconsin man who voted for Donald Trump is now considering leaving the U.S. after his wife, a Peruvian citizen, was detained by ICE upon returning from their honeymoon, as he struggles to stay hopeful about her fate.
Camila Muñoz arrived in the U.S. on a work-study visa in 2019 but was unable to return to Peru due to pandemic restrictions, leading to an expired visa, as reported by Newsweek. While waiting for permanent residency, she married Bradley Bartell, a Trump supporter, in Wisconsin.
The couple finally took their delayed honeymoon in February, traveling to Puerto Rico. However, upon their return, ICE detained Muñoz over her immigration status.
Despite supporting Trump's policies and not regretting his vote, Bartell is grappling with the harsh reality of the administration's crackdown on undocumented immigrants, which now affects his own family.
Bartell has since traveled over 2,000 miles to visit his wife at an ICE detention center in Louisiana, describing the experience as both heartwarming and devastating.
"It was good to be able to see her and hug her and see her beautiful smile, but leaving without her was an awful feeling. Just terrible," Bartell told Newsweek.
Bartell is considering relocating to Peru if his wife is deported, although he worries about the impact on his 12-year-old son.
"She is doing O.K., the publicity seems to be helping her keep her hopes up and keeping a positive attitude," he told the outlet. "It's tough for her in there, we are doing our best but it is difficult to stay positive."
Meanwhile, Muñoz will stay in ICE custody while her legal case unfolds, and her lawyers will file a Notice to Appear in immigration court.
