French President Emmanuel Macron corrected U.S. counterpart Donald Trump during a meeting at the White House on Monday after the U.S. president claimed Europe "loaned" money to Ukraine.
"Just so you understand Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine," Trump claimed during a press conference in the Oval Office. "They get their money back."
"No, in fact, to be frank, we paid. We paid 60% of the total effort," Macron stated while gently touching Trump's arm. "And it was through, like the U.S., loans, guaranteed grants, and we provided real money."

Macron added that Europe has $230 billion in frozen Russian assets, but clarified that it is not collateral for France's loan to Ukraine because it doesn't belong to them.
"If, at the end of the day, in the negotiation we will have with Russia, they are ready to give it to us, super. It will be a loan at the end of the day and Russia will have paid for that," Macron continued.
Trump was seemingly unwilling to believe Macron's claims. He shrugged and made a so-so hand gesture while the French president spoke.
Macron's visit, which coincided with the three-year anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War, marks the first from a European leader since Trump's second term started last month, Reuters reported. The French president aimed to persuade Trump not to abandon Ukraine as he continues holding peace talks with Russia.
