President Donald Trump has ordered his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to report any lawsuits against his administration that he considers to be "frivolous" so that he may target plaintiffs with repercussions through executive action.

The Trump administration has repeatedly targeted law firms participating in investigating Trump, having revoked security clearances for employees at several firms, including Paul Weiss, Perkins Coie and Covington & Burling.

Trump announced that the executive order targeting Paul Weiss was withdrawn as the company "will not adopt, use, or pursue any DEI policies" and pledged $40 million in pro bono legal services. However, the firm's version of the agreement does not include any references to any DEI policies, according to Business Insider.

Lawyers and legal associates have denounced Trump's attacks against their industry, with some even stepping down from their positions in protest. Rachel Cohen, a Skadden associate, announced her resignation after stating that members of her occupation were not doing enough to subvert Trump's attacks.

"Trump pushes the limits of everything: the legal boundaries, picking fights with massive law firms, he's calling for the impeachment of federal judges," said former federal prosecutor and current trial lawyer Neama Rahmani to Business Insider. "So look, say what you want about him, but he seems to be winning — or at least putting a lot of pressure on folks throughout the legal industry to capitulate and bend to his will."

Bondi received a memo from Trump on Friday titled "Preventing Abuses of the Legal System and the Federal Court," ordering her to hold law firms accountable.

"Lawyers and law firms that engage in actions that violate the laws of the United States or rules governing attorney conduct must be efficiently and effectively held accountable," the memo read. "Accountability is especially important when misconduct by lawyers and law firms threatens our national security, homeland security, public safety, or election integrity."

"I hereby direct the Attorney General to seek sanctions against attorneys and law firms who engage in frivolous, unreasonable, and vexatious litigation against the United States or in matters before executive departments and agencies of the United States," it continued.
