President Donald Trump had an "unglued meltdown," berating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when pressed on what he would do if Russia violated a ceasefire agreement during Friday's meeting that could decide the fate of the war.
"Well, what have they -- what if anything? What if a bomb drops on your head right now?" Trump, said, cutting off the question. "Okay, what have they broken? I don't know. They broke it with Biden, because Biden, they didn't respect him. They didn't respect Obama. They respect me."
The exchange unfolded during Zelenskyy's Washington visit, where he sat rigid and wide-eyed, his discomfort palpable as Trump pressed on with his remarks.
Trump then accused past U.S. administrations of mishandling relations with Russia, invoking the Mueller investigation and allegations about Hunter Biden's laptop.
"Putin went through a hell of a lot with me. He went through a phony witch hunt where they used him and Russia, Russia, Russia," Trump claimed. "That was a phony Hunter, Biden, Joe Biden scam, Hillary Clinton, shifty, Adam Schiff, it was a Democrat scam, and he had to go through that. And he did go through it. We didn't end up in a war. And he went through it. He was accused of all that stuff he had nothing to do with."
Trump didn't stop there: "He might have broken deals with Obama and Bush, and he might have broken them with Biden. He did. Maybe, maybe he did. I don't know what happened, but he didn't break it with me. He wants to make a deal. I don't know if he can make a deal."
At one point, Trump fixed his gaze on Zelenskyy -- whose uneasy expression showed his discomfort -- and questioned his gratitude for U.S. support.
"The problem is I've empowered you to be a tough guy, and I don't think you'd be a tough guy without the United States," Trump said. "And your people are very brave, but you're either going to make a deal or we're out, and if we're out, you'll fight it out. I don't think it's going to be pretty, but you'll fight it out, but you don't have the cards."
"This is going to be great television, I will say that," Trump concluded. Moments later, Zelenskyy gave an awkward thumbs-up.

The meeting itself comes after weeks of boiling tensions between the two, with reports that Trump had initially rescinded Zelenskyy's invitation to Washington, only to reinstate it following intervention from French President Emmanuel Macron.
The make-or-break gathering is expected to finalize a U.S.-brokered deal that offers the United States control over a vast share of Ukraine's mineral wealth in exchange for security guarantees and a peace deal with Russia.
Trump recently called Zelenskyy a "dictator without elections," and continues to grill Europe to take more responsibility for Ukraine's security. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested Ukraine should show "gratitude" for Washington's support. Trump has also warned Ukraine to "forget" about joining NATO.
Meanwhile, Trump has refused to call Putin a dictator. The U.S. also abstained from a UN vote Monday that officially labeled Russia the aggressor in the war.
