President-elect Donald Trump slammed former special counsel Jack Smith over the release of his report about efforts to overturn the result of the 2020 election and the conclusion that the Republican would have been convicted had he not won the 2024 election.
In a publication on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump called Smith a "lamebrain prosecutor" and said he was "unable to get his case tried before the Election, which I won in a landslide."
"Deranged Jack Smith was unable to successfully prosecute the Political Opponent of his "boss," Crooked Joe Biden, so he ends up writing yet another "Report" based on information that the Unselect Committee of Political Hacks and Thugs ILLEGALLY DESTROYED AND DELETED, because it showed how totally innocent I was, and how completely guilty Nancy Pelosi, and others, were," Trump added. "THE VOTERS HAVE SPOKEN!!!" he concluded.
Smith released his 170-page report early Tuesday, which concluded that Trump's actions "inspired his supporters to commit acts of physical violence" and that he knowingly spread false claims about election fraud. Trump had sought to block the release of the report, but his efforts were denied on the courts.
Smith defended the decision to pursue charges, dismissing Trump's repeated accusations that the prosecution was politically motivated. "The claim from Mr. Trump that my decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors is, in a word, laughable," Smith wrote.
The report also criticized Trump for encouraging violence during the weeks following the 2020 election and for his continued praise of Jan. 6 rioters, whom he has referred to as "patriots." Smith highlighted Trump's praise of a group of jailed defendants known as the "January 6 Choir," as well as his public reminiscing about the Capitol attack as a "beautiful day."
Smith detailed in another passage of the report the harassment he and his team were subjected to during the investigation, highlighting Trump's use of social media as a main catalyst.
"Mr. Trump's resort to intimidation and harassment during the investigation was not new, as demonstrated by his actions during the charged conspiracies," wrote Smith during a passage of the document.
Ultimately, the charges against Trump, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of an official proceeding, were dropped due to a longstanding Department of Justice policy barring the prosecution of sitting presidents. Smith resigned as special counsel last week after finishing the report.
