Donald Trump Volodymyr Zelensky

In a combative meeting, President Donald Trump repeatedly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing Zelensky of "gambling with World War III" in an exchange that left many arguing Trump himself is pushing the world to the brink.

"We're gonna feel very good and very strong. You're right now not in a very good position. You've allowed yourself to be in a very bad position. You're not in a good position. You don't have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards," Trump told Zelensky.

"I'm not playing cards. I'm very serious, Mr. President," Zelensky said firmly.

"You're playing cards. You're gambling with the lives of millions of people. You're gambling with World War III. You're gambling with World War III, and what you're doing is very disrespectful to this country, the country that's backed you," Trump stated.

"I will respect you," Zelensky replied.

Vice President J.D. Vance then jumped in, asking, "Have you said 'thank you' once this entire meeting?"

"A lot of times," Zelensky answered.

"No, in this entire meeting, have you said 'thank you?'" Vance pressed.

Fury erupted online, with many condemning Trump's recklessness.

"'You're gambling with World War 3' is straight-up Kremlin propaganda," one user said.

"By supporting Putin, Trump is gambling with World War III," another added.

"Trump has the gall to mention World War III and say it would be Ukraine's fault? If it happens, it'll be because of YOU," another user put it.

Trump later took to Truth Social, claiming Zelensky "disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office" and that the Ukrainian leader was "not ready for peace." He suggested negotiations with Russia were now uncertain, telling CNN's Kaitlan Collins when asked about the future of talks, "We'll see."

The meeting followed weeks of friction between the two leaders, with reports that Trump initially rescinded Zelensky's invitation to Washington before reinstating it after pressure from French President Emmanuel Macron. Trump has previously called Zelensky a "dictator without elections" and demanded Europe take more responsibility for Ukraine's security.

Meanwhile, Trump has refused to label Vladimir Putin a dictator and has been critical of Ukraine's NATO aspirations.

With tensions soaring and no resolution in sight, many fear Friday's exchange could derail future negotiations.
