Washington Redskins offensive lineman Trent Williams has been suspended four games according to NFL.com.
The suspension is due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy. This couldn’t come at a worse time for the Redskins. Not only have they not won each of their last two games, but their next four matches are pretty tough and very critical. The Redskins take on the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers in their next four games. The Redskins are currently 4-3-1, which is good enough for last place in the NFC East.
The Redskins have actually done a pretty good job at protecting quarterback Kirk Cousins and their rushing attack ranks a modest 14th overall in the league. Losing their starting offensive tackle at this juncture could spell huge trouble.
Williams has played his entire seven year career with the Redskins since being drafted by them in the first round in 2010. The NFL trade deadline has already passed, so unless the Redskins can strike gold in free agency, someone else on the roster will have to step up.
"Today, Trent Williams was suspended by the NFL under the terms of the Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse for the next four games. We met with Trent today to discuss this unfortunate news. Per the terms of the Policy, Trent will be permitted to participate in team meetings and workout at the Redskins' facilities throughout this time. The Redskins are counting on Trent to help our team when he returns from suspension. Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota Vikings after our bye this upcoming weekend. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the NFL or NFLPA," the Redskins said in a statement.
