Trayvon Martin's girlfriend, only known publicly as "Witness 8," has been caught in a lie that may have repercussions on what happens to George Zimmerman, accused of murdering her boyfriend. At a hearing regarding an exchange of evidence between the prosecutor and defendant, defense attorney Don West reported that the 19-year-old woman lied about her age in interviews with Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump.

The Miami Gardens, Fla. resident told Crump she was 16 at the time of the shooting. Records revealed that she was indeed 18 years old when she conversed with Martin over the telephone the night 29-year-old neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman shot him. The Sunshine State's lead prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda was later asked by reporters whether the girlfriend will be charged with perjury.

However, the accusation is not the only one that has surfaced against the woman. She earlier declared under oath that she was unable to attend Martin's funeral because she was hospitalized. West noted that prosecutor John Guy was unable to find any record of a hospital stay.

Lead defense attorney for Zimmerman, Mark O'Mara, noted that he would hold off on commenting on any accusations against the girlfriend until a deposition is held with the witness later this month, according to the Orlando, Fla. FOX affiliate.

"The state did what it was supposed to do and let us know there was a problem with their witness. We now know it and have an opportunity to talk to her," O'Mara said.

Zimmerman's trial for second degree murder is scheduled for June of this year. He has plead not guilty to all charges. There is no official word on what repercussions it will have on the future of the case against him.
