Not long after the San Antonio Spurs fell in Game 7 of the 2013 NBA Finals to the Miami Heat, the team's 7-time All Star Tracy McGrady is calling it quits. McGrady said in a tweet Monday morning that he would be retiring from the NBA. The 34-year-old was the two-time scoring champion and spent his last games playing for San Antonio after signing on late in the season, playing only a few times in the Western Conference Finals. "It's been 16 years playing the game I love. I've had a great run but it's time for it to come to an end," he said.
He left his career open-ended, however, as he concluded his tweet announcement with the phrase, "stay tuned," leading some to speculate that he could continue playing outside of the NBA. He retires with a statline that reads 19.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists a game, USA Today reported. He previously played for the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets, where he was a notable scorer. He was drafted ninth overall in 1997 and made his start with the Toronto Raptors fresh out of high school. Injuries plagued his career in his mid-20s, putting him out for several games.
The Rockets traded him to the New York Knicks in February of 2010, beginning a few seasons of meandering between teams. He signed onto the Detroit Pistons and the Hawks for one-year each before landing on the Spurs. He did not play a regular season game the entirety of the 2012-13 season and scored no points in the two times he played during the NBA Finals this season. He played a total of 14 minutes and 22 seconds in mad dashes toward the end of crucial games during the Finals. It was the first time he made it out of the first round of the playoffs -- with Game 7 losses in 2003, 2005 and 2007 -- keeping a title just out of his reach.
