A top Scottish official has resigned after bombshell claims emerged that he "pressured" Ukrainian refugees to sext him.
Cammy Day, the leader of the Edinburgh City Council, resigned Monday after being suspended by his own party on Sunday in regards to allegations that he sent Ukrainian refugees sexually explicit messages, as reported by Sky News.
Day said in a statement that he made the decision to resign because the "recent commentary on my personal life is detracting from the important work this Labour-led council does for the people of Edinburgh." He did not address the allegations in the statement.
Two Ukrainian refugees told the Sunday Mail earlier this month that Day had asked them explicit questions about their sexual preferences and asked them out on dates.
"Every time he wrote to me in the dating app I felt under pressure, afraid to say no or say something wrong," one of the refugees, who fled from Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, told the Sunday Mail. "I tried to ignore all his hints about sex or meeting up because I was afraid of his influence and just tried to be polite to avoid any conflict."
Police Scotland said they first received a complaint about the former councilor's "inappropriate behavior" in October. The investigation is ongoing.
"It is absolutely vital that these issues are explored fully and comprehensively because they are of such significant concern," John Swinney, Scotland's first minister, told reporters prior to Day's resignation, as reported by The Telegraph.
