A former Republican governor from Ohio has offered an eleventh-hour endorsement to a Democratic candidate in the state's closely contested Senate race with a Donald Trump-backed GOP contender, according to a report.

Former Ohio Governor Bob Taft endorsed Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, a longtime political opponent, instead of the expected choice of Republican Bernie Moreno, The Hill reported.

The news comes as the state continues to undergo a significant political shift toward conservatism, with Donald Trump-aligned candidates gaining traction. Despite this, Brown has maintained a strong base due to his extensive experience and bipartisan approach in the Senate.

As for Taft's family, they have a deeply-rooted Republican legacy, and his unexpected endorsement adds shock to the highly anticipated election. Taft announced his decision in a letter to the Dayton Daily News, expressing preference for Brown's effectiveness, experience, and advocacy for Ohioans as key reasons for making the choice.

"I have always run for office under the banner of the Republican Party, am a conservative and usually vote a straight Republican ticket," Taft wrote. "Although still a Republican, I will be making an exception this year in Ohio's U.S. Senate race by supporting Sherrod Brown. In doing so, I will be joining most voters who make judgments about candidates based not just on party affiliation but, often more importantly, on the candidate and his or her character, experience and expertise."

While Taft does not align with all of Brown's policies, he did convey confidence in his ability to represent the state's interests. The endorsement marks the first time in decades that Taft has crossed party lines in a major election.

"Although not in agreement with Senator Brown on every policy issue, I believe Ohioans very much need a highly effective, experienced advocate in the U.S. Senate – someone who is squarely focused on both Ohio's and America's needs. This is the kind of leader Sherrod Brown has been," Taft wrote.

Taft's endorsement also raises questions about whether or not it will sway any Republican or independent voters toward Brown. If Brown succeeds in retaining his seat, the endorsement may also be seen as a factor in bridging the gap between traditional Democrats and Republicans in the state.
