Following the eventful two-part "Top Gear" Patagonia Special, "Top Gear" Season 22 officially premieres on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015. We break down several highlights that the "Top Gear" trio have in store for us this season!
First, "Top Gear" completely rethinks their past "Top Gear" specials that involve traversing exotic locations in derelict cars. Old cars are mechanically simple and can be McGyvered to keep going despite thousands of miles of merciless abuse. However, could a modern car with complex electronics survive the same sort of punishment? Clarkson, Hammond, and May are taking on the brutal Australian outback in some of the most luxurious European GT cars in the market, including this BMW 6-series Gran Coupe driven by Jeremy Clarkson that is pictured uncomfortably surrounded by a herd of cows. Richard Hammond drives a Bentley Continental GT while James May has ironically chosen the rapid Nissan GT-R.
Next, the trio take a step back to understand the fashionable SUV. The anthropological phenomenon has given rise to posh off-roaders including the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan, and Audi Q5 crossover. However, is it possible to purchase a trendy and fashionable SUV with only a few hundred pounds? Each presenter will turn up in their own 4x4 and arrive at the "Top Gear" top-secret testing facility where they will be given a number of challenges.
Over the years, "Top Gear" have produced numerous of memorable segments that praised legendary European automakers that possess rich history in motorsports. This time, Jeremy Clarkson and James May take a moment to tip their hat to Peugeot, which they claim is the most brilliant and innovative carmaker in history.
It wouldn't be a proper "Top Gear" season without a race of some sort. This time, it's not a Bugatti Veyron versus a plane or a Nissan GT-R versus the Japanese bullet train. This season, it's an all-new race across St. Petersburg that features Jeremy Clarkson in an electric Renault Twizy versus Richard Hammond on a bicycle and the Stig riding public transportation.
Of course, it isn't all fun and games at "Top Gear." The secret "Top Gear" R&D facility is back as the trio must now reinvent the ambulance to make emergency vehicles respond better to distress calls. As you can already imagine, the trio of presenters delivered their interpretation of the emergency vehicle to varying levels of epic failure.
Speaking of distress signals, "Top Gear" found sudden interest in a particular watch with a built-in GPS that is allegedly capable of sending out a distress beacon in order to summon help anywhere in the world. To test this technology, "Top Gear" gave the watch to Richard Hammond and threw him into the frozen Canadian tundra. Now it is up to May and Clarkson in a yellow Ford SVT Raptor truck to reach their pal.
Finally, "Top Gear" Season 22 will also look into some of the most significant cars to enter the market since "Top Gear" Season 21 had ended, including the completely game changing BMW i8 hybrid sports car. The "Top Gear" Season 22 release date is Jan. 25, 2015. Stay tuned as we learn more in the weeks ahead!
