This is it, ladies and gents. After being off the air for almost a year, "Top Gear" Season 22 officially returns to the BBC on Sunday, January 25. Last week, presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May came together for "An Evening With Top Gear," a live broadcast one-off show in London that lets the audience interact with the trio ahead of the season. During the live event, Clarkson revealed that the team have yet to finish editing the first episode. We sure hope they got cracking!
On "Top Gear" Season 22 Episode 1, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are joined by the Stig on a trip to the beautiful city of St. Petersburg in Russia. Their mission? An old fashion race across the city to decide whether a car is the best method of transportation once and for all. Richard Hammond will try to win on a bicycle. As for Jeremy Clarkson, he believes the city's waterways are underused. Clarkson chose to turn up the heat and race in a massive hovercraft. Finally, James May hopes to uphold the honor of the car by driving across the city in the compact electic Renault Twizy. And the Stig? He will attempt to make the same trip via public transportation. Given the fact that the Stig is great for only driving around the Top Gear test track, the faceless racing savant might as well forfeit.
If the challenge sounds familiar, that's because it is. Back in Series 10 Episode 5, the three presenters had to beat London rush hour traffic in a race for the London City Airport. Once again, Hammond rode a bicycle, Clarkson cruised through Thames in a Cougar powerboat, and James May navigated a Mercedes-Benz GL500 SUV through the city. Meanwhile, the Stig boarded the London transit system. Somehow, Stig ultimately managed to arrive to the airport ahead of May, making Captain Slow dead last. At the time, May blamed the car's massive size as useless in urban streets. This time around, May hopes the Renault Twizy will be better suited in the city of St. Petersburg.
"Top Gear" Series 22 Episode 1 will also feature the all new Lamborghini Huracan. Richard Hammond will be behind the wheel of the latest supercar from Sant'Agata Bolognese and will decide whether it is still as flamboyant as fun as a mid-engine Italian sports car should be or if the modern refinements have diluted the exciting driving experience.
