According to a press release from the US Social Security Office the top baby names for 2012 were Sophia and Jacob. Rounding out the top 10 were Aiden and Elizabeth.
According to the Social Security Office one baby name growing in popularity for girls comes from the immensely popular HBO series "Game of Thrones." Naming your child after a favorite character is not unheard off. Pop culture plays a large role in all of our lives.
Arya Stark is a character on 'Game of Thrones." She is one tough tween and the inspiration for many baby names in the US in 2012. In the press release Mark Hinkle, the acting press secretary writes,
"Arya is the daughter of a leader of one of the seven kingdoms. She is also an expert sword fighter, so doubt her influence on the popular names list at your own risk."
Arya jumped 298 spots on the top baby names 2012 list to number 413, Fox News reports. An unusual name growing in popularity for boys is Major. The press release says the name may have also grown in popularity due to a TV show.
"Home by Novogratz" is a popular home design show which features the son of two home designers Major Novogratz. Others credit the Major's rise in popularity as tribute to the US soldiers.
If pop culture is any indication of what the next generation of names will look like be on the lookout for a lot more Arya's. "Game of Thrones" is one of today's most popular shows.
"Game of Thrones" is currently in its third season and Arya Stark is having a tough time of it. Still separated from her family she was last seen with a group of men loyal to no banner and believers in the one true God. Arya had to watch one of her enemies be granted his freedom after winning a fight. She then felt the sting of betrayal one again when her friend was traded to the Red Priestess by the "Brothers without Banners."
In the previews for the next episode of "Game of Thrones" Arya tells Lord Beric her one true God is "death."
