The 2016 Tony Awards have been a night to remember, from the moving tributes to the Orlando shooting victims, to the amazing performances by artists who work hard to make the world a better place every day. One of those cheerful performances included Gloria Estefan and the cast of her and Emilio’s Broadway show, “On Your Feet!”
The medley, which was introduced by Emilio Estefan, included some of Gloriw Estefan’s biggest hits such as “Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “Conga” and “Everlasting Love” with the play’s stars Ana Villafañe and Josh Segarra leading the pack. It was definitely a much-needed moment of joy and cheer that lit up the room with the Latino rhythm and colorful lights.
Earlier this morning, Gloria Estefan expressed her grief about the tragic mass-shooting that took place in Orlando’s gay nightclub Pulse, leaving 50 dead.
Sunday morning, after the news broke, the organizers of the 70th annual celebration released a statement via Twitter saying, “Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected. The Tony Awards dedicates tonight’s ceremony to them.”
Gloria Estefan joined those reacting to the horryifyng events in her home state and posted a photo on Instagram with Nayib’s Song Lyrics, where she wrote: “My heart breaks for the friends and families of the souls whose lives were taken by two senseless acts of violence in two days in Orlando, Florida, a place I consider my home. As these massacres become commonplace it becomes even more important for us to love each other as much as humanly possible and to never lose hope that we can somehow make things better. Love will always win and lead us through the darkness into the light... May the souls of the victims rest in peace...”
