Broadway's biggest night has no doubt been darkened after the worst mass shooting in U.S. history took place at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday morning. For that reason, tonight's Tony Awards ceremony is being dedicated in full to the victims of today’s tragic event.
The organizers of the 70th annual celebration released a statement via Twitter saying, “Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected. The Tony Awards dedicates tonight’s ceremony to them.”
Broadway has deep ties with the LGBT community, so along with the world, several theater personalities shared their condolences and reactions as well.
Gloria Estefan posted a photo on Instagram with Nayib’s Song Lyrics, and she wrote: “My heart breaks for the friends and families of the souls whose lives were taken by two senseless acts of violence in two days in Orlando, Florida, a place I consider my home. As these massacres become commonplace it becomes even more important for us to love each other as much as humanly possible and to never lose hope that we can somehow make things better. Love will always win and lead us through the darkness into the light... May the souls of the victims rest in peace...”
Others such as Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Lea Michele, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Patina Miller, Karen Olivo, Leslie Odom Jr., amongst many others, also posted their thoughts on social media.
The 70th Annual Tony Awards will be hosted by British comedian and “Late, Late Show” host James Corden on Sunday, June 12 starting at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
The night will most likely be huge for Lin-Manuel Miranda whose smash hit musical “Hamilton” earned record-breaking 16 nominations dominating most categories. Four of the play’s nominations are exclusively Miranda: Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Book and Best Score.
