Border czar Tom Homan defended New York City Mayor Eric Adams as the Democrat faced a grilling from a GOP-led committee over the city's sanctuary policies. Homan, who is said to have a collaborative relationship with Adams as he spearheads the Trump administration's mass deportation efforts, said the mayor is "trying to protect New Yorkers from violent illegal aliens."

The defense came as Adams testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on New York City's sanctuary policies, which the GOP says seeks to thwart the Trump administration's mass deportation efforts. The hearing also included Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D).

During the hearing, the mayors— including Adams— defended their public safety records, saying they comply with all federal and state immigration laws, and pointed out that crime rates in their cities had dropped, in spite of the Trump administration's claims that migrants make cities unsafe.

But unlike the other three mayors, Adams is also taking heat from his fellow Congress Democrats. Many members of the party are claiming that the mayor reached a quid pro quo agreement with the Trump administration in which his corruption case would be dropped in exchange for the mayor helping the GOP with its immigration priorities. Seven prosecutors resigned last month as the DOJ asked them to effectively do that.

"I personally agree with the majority of New Yorkers and think Mr. Mayor that you should resign," Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) told Adams during the hearing.

"We have a right to know if the Trump administration has coerced you into agreeing with anything," Garcia said. "Are you selling out New Yorkers to save yourself from prosecution?"

Adams denied taking part in any quid pro quo.

Following the criticism, Trump's border czar Tom Homan took to social media to defend Adams, flattering him for trying to "protect New Yorkers."

"One Democrat congressman accuses Mayor Adams of 'selling out New Yorkers' while making a deal with Tom Homan. Simply disgusting," Homan wrote. "Mayor Adams is trying to protect New Yorkers from violent illegal aliens. He is trying to protect the NYPD from being attacked by illegal aliens."

"He is trying to protect young women from being burned alive on a subway by an illegal alien. He is trying to protect the next Laken Riley because NYC sanctuary laws released her killer when he should have been turned over to ICE before he made that Biden approved taxpayer funded trip to Georgia. I can go on and on and list hundreds of more examples. By working with ICE, lives will be saved," he added.

The calls for Adams' resignation come as Democratic Reps. Jamie Raskin (Md.) and Jasmine Crockett (Texas), who are members of the House Judiciary Committee, announced they were launching an investigation into the DOJ's moves to drop the corruption charges against Adams.
