An Arkansas mother and stepfather have been arrested in connection with the death of a 2-year-old boy who authorities say suffered fatal injuries during a disturbing attempt to "teach" him how to swim.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of Annastacia Atkins and Dakota Shawn Hays Jan. 13, following a months-long investigation into the toddler's June 14, 2024, death.
Hays, the boy's stepfather, had been repeatedly throwing the child into a pool against his will, according to court documents obtained by 5 News. Witnesses told investigators that Hays also allegedly forced the child underwater and demanded he retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool, despite the toddler's pleas to stop.
On June 14, authorities responded to reports of an unresponsive child. Hays reportedly claimed the child had been swimming all day and may have inhaled water. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.
An autopsy later ruled the death a homicide, citing prolonged oxygen deprivation and severe injuries consistent with abusive trauma. The toddler had extensive head and facial bruising, abrasions on his torso and genital area in various stages of healing, and blunt force injuries that investigators determined were not accidental, court documents stated.
Witnesses also reported ongoing physical abuse in the home. One child allegedly described being hit with a wooden stick and said Hays was especially violent toward the toddler, leaving visible marks.
Atkins, the child's mother, is charged with first-degree murder and permitting the abuse of a minor. Her bond is set at $750,000. Hays faces charges of first-degree murder and first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor, with a $1 million bond.
Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Holmes stated that further details are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation.
