A TikTok user has gone viral after posting videos in which she admitted to pretending to be her deceased twin sister to spare her grandparents the grief of her loss.
"POV: You finally told your family that your twin sister pass away five years ago, and they took down every single family photo that had her in it," she wrote on a viral TikTok video which now has over 4 million views.
Lifestyle influencer Annie Niu said she spent multiple years posing as her deceased twin sister, fooling her grandparents when visiting. She stated that she did so because she was afraid that the grief might be detrimental to their health.
Niu made a follow-up video in which she explained to viewers that her secret was revealed this year as her grandmother was on her deathbed. She explained that it had originally been her father's idea to deceive her grandparents.
"I think it's because he didn't wanna withhold this information but he also didn't wanna cause them any heartbreak," she explained. "And god forbid they are 92 and something happens."
Niu posed as her twin, who died of viral meningitis, on holidays when she visited them. Other family members who also didn't know that Niu's sister was dead, such as her aunt, responded to the news negatively.
"My aunts apparently made the decision to take down every single photo that contained my sister," Niu explained.
"Imagine my surprise when I took my kids to go visit my grandpa and I look on the walls and none of our photos are there."
To this day, Niu's grandfather does not know about her sister's passing.
