A Spanish TikTok star may be jailed for up to 12 years over sexual abuse allegations after he reportedly tricked women into having unprotected sex by feigning his own infertility.
The alleged offender, Naim Darrechi, 19, of Mallorca, who has amassed 26 million followers on social media, recently said, during an interview with Mostopapi on YouTube, that he's never used a condom during sexual encounters with his previous partners because he found sex difficult with the contraceptive on, the BBC reported.
He would later boast that he had never gotten anyone pregnant, so he would tell them: “Relax, I’m sterile. It’s true.”
Darrechi has moved to apologize to his fans on Instagram saying, “I want to say sorry from my heart, from my conscience. At times I don’t realize the responsibility that I have and I get into trouble for my views. I am sorry.”
It comes after his initial comments went viral and sparked outrage from women and girls across Spain. Some pointed to the fact that his appalling behavior may have passed on a sexually transmitted disease. Others labeled the social media star a “disappointment” and “disgusting.”
Spanish Equality Minister Irene Montero then announced on Twitter that she had asked a prosecutor to investigate whether Darrechi had actually tricked women into having unprotected sex with him, the Evening Standard noted.
“Removing a condom or ejaculating inside (a woman) without consent is now sexual abuse and the law will recognize it as aggression,” her tweet reads. “Bragging to 26 million followers of something like this reflects the urgency of putting consent at the center. We will inform the Prosecutor’s Office.”
Darrechi could face between one and 12 years prison sentence if he is convicted of sexual abuse under a new law passed earlier this month, which reclassifies all non-consensual sex as rape.
The change to the criminal code came following public outrage over loopholes in a series of court cases at the back of the notorious “Wolf Pack'' case, where five men gang-raped an 18-year-old woman at the Pamplona bull-running festival. The offenders received a lesser sentence for the crime of sexual abuse rather than sexual assault.
The law, which brought Spain in line with Sweden and Portugal, will come into action later this year. British campaigners are also pushing for its lawmakers to introduce such changes in the United Kingdom, according to i.
