'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14' will serve as the last game released by the partnership of EA Sports and the World No. 1 golfer. EA Sports

For 15 years, EA Sports and World No. 1 golfer Tiger Woods have teamed up to create one of the most popular and highest selling sports video games on the market. Thanks to the popularity of professional golf, the PGA Tour and Tiger Woods himself, EA Sports landed a gold mine in 1998 when they partnered with a then rising superstar. Fifteen years later - after a successful run that saw the production of 16 different video games - the partnership between the Electronic Arts sports division and Tiger Woods has unfortunately come to an end.

'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 99' was the first game released under the joint partnership between the 37-year-old PGA Tour star and EA Sports. Following the successful debut - available for play on PlayStation and PC - EA released yearly editions of the game. The final game, 'Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14,' released in March of 2013 and although the partnership between the two has clearly benefit both parties, Woods' agent Mark Steinberg said recently that a change of direction was needed for EA and Tiger after 15 years of great success.

"We had an incredible run," Steinberg said recently. "Outside of [John] Madden, you would be hard pressed to find a sports figure that meant as much to a video game company as Tiger meant to EA. But times are changing and EA had to re-evaluate the partnership, and frankly so did we."

Though EA Sports will no longer have the Tiger Woods name attached to their game, the company said recently that they do plan to continue producing golf games. This is certainly a positive for a company that just last month announced plans to cancel future production of the popular 'NCAA Football' series due to a settlement with former players.

"We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors," EA Sports' vice president and GM of golf Daryl Holt said. "Moving forward, we will continue to work with the PGA Tour exclusively to create groundbreaking golfing titles and out partnership remains strong."

In 15 years, the partnership between EA Sports and Tiger Woods sold over $770 million worth of games, a tremendous accomplishment given the competitive nature of the large sports video game market.
