Investigations are underway after a Colombian bungee-jumper plummeted to her death following a communications mishap, which caused her to leap from a viaduct without a fastened cord to her ankles on Sunday.
First-time jumper Yecenia Morales, 25, was reportedly waiting for her chance to leap off the bridge in Amaga in northern Colombia on a tour organized by Sky Bungee Jumping when she misheard the instructor, who had told her boyfriend to jump.
Thinking the cue was meant for her, she then stepped off the platform before her bungee cord could be attached to her and leaped to her death about 164 feet to the valley below, according to the New York Post.
Morales’ distraught beau rushed down to the aid of the young lawyer and futilely attempted to perform CPR but it was already too late. It is believed the young daredevil suffered a massive heart attack even before hitting the ground. She also sustained several injuries from the free fall.
Firefighters later pronounced her dead at the scene. Meanwhile, her boyfriend, who was not identified by police, is reportedly receiving medical treatment for injuries he received while scrambling down to find her. He is said to be in a state of shock over the ordeal, the New York Daily Post noted.
“She got confused,” Gustavo Guzmán, the mayor of Fredonia, told the media. “The signal was for the boyfriend to jump because he was already attached to the security equipment. They had only put the harness on her so she got confused and rushed.”
Authorities have since ruled out foul play but launched an investigation over claims that at least two companies at the site were offering services and supplying equipment while unlicensed, Metro reported. The firms have not yet been named.
The company operating the excursion, Sky Bungee Jumping, is also under probe to determine whether it had proper licenses and qualifications.
Morales’ family members have since expressed their grief over the deceased woman.
“My sister is a girl with all the best values, happy, spontaneous, with virtues that made her love her friends, and helped the people in need,” her grieving brother Andres said.
