Three teen girls from the same family drowned to death after they fell into an irrigation tank while reportedly trying to take selfies to post on social media.
The tragic incident occurred at Singangaon village of India’s Telangana on Sunday, July 4, but came to light on Monday.
The deceased girls were identified as 16-year-old Elime Suneetha, her 14-year-old sister, Vaishali, and their cousin, 14-year-old Anjali.
According to the police, Suneetha and Vaishali were spending some time at their agricultural field on Sunday afternoon with their mother Mangalabai and their cousin. The girls were reportedly taking photographs on their cell phones.
The girls then decided to go to the water tank nearby to take some pictures to post on social media.
After the girls did not return for a while, Mangalabai went home thinking the girls had already gone home. However, she came home to learn that the girls have not returned.
The family then went looking for the girls but failed to locate them. Suneetha and Vaishali's father, Dada Rao, approached the police and lodged a missing person’s report.
On Monday morning, few villagers spotted the bodies of the teen girls floating in the waters. They alerted the authorities and police officers responded to the scene.
The bodies were pulled out of the water and sent to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Investigators also recovered a cell phone from the scene. They have managed to unlock the phone and obtain the photographs the teens took moments before their death.
According to the police, no foul play is suspected in the deaths. A preliminary investigation revealed that the spot near the water tank where the girls were standing to take selfies was slippery. Investigators believe that the trio apparently slipped and fell into the tank.
The exact cause of death is unclear at this time. The incident is being investigated and the autopsy results were being awaited.
Police say Anjali, who hails from Maharashtra had come to the village to meet her relatives.
