Close to 100,000 organic eggs were stolen from a Pennsylvania farm on Saturday night as egg prices surge across the country.
Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the theft of an estimated $40,000 worth of eggs from Pete and Gerry's Organics in Greencastle, Pennsylvania. The stolen eggs were taken from a distribution trailer around 8:40 p.m. Saturday, according to authorities.
Pete and Gerry's Organics, known for its commitment to ethical farming practices, confirmed the incident in a statement to CBS 21, saying they are working with law enforcement to resolve the matter but could not provide further details due to the ongoing investigation.
The theft comes as egg prices rise across the country, driven by inflation, fluctuating feed costs, and supply chain issues as millions of egg-laying hens succumb to the bird flu. With such a large quantity stolen, concerns have been raised about potential black-market sales of the eggs.
Police have not released any information on possible suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing.
