An Indian thief suffered a heart attack after seeing the large sum of money he robbed. The situation became much more complicated for him when he had to spend a significant portion of the money on hospital care.
Authorities apprehended one of the two thieves on Wednesday in connection with the theft committed last month in the Kotwali Dehat area of Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh. He admitted to the police during interrogation that the duo committed the crime. Authorities had filed a lawsuit and started an investigation against the accused.
According to the Times of India, two thieves broke into a public service center owned by one Nawab Haider on the intervening night of February 16 and 17. They did not expect to find such a huge loot -- Rs 7 lakh in cash ($9,536.07) and other valuables kept in an almirah.
The offenders told investigators that they were overjoyed as they discovered the large sum of money and split it equally.
"The accused are habitual offenders and have several cases registered against them at different police stations," Bijnor superintendent of police Dharm Veer Singh said.
"However, soon after the theft, buoyed Ajaj suffered a heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital. He had to squander a big chunk of the stolen money on his treatment. Naushad, however, spent the money in betting in Delhi," he added.
Despite being placed under lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian authorities recorded a 17 percent increase in crime rate in 2020 compared to 2019. The detection rate also increased from 89 percent in 2019 to 92.5 percent in 2020.
Wallets, pocketbooks, and other valuables are easy targets for robbers. These thieves also take advantage of stealing things when people leave items unattended.Hence, experts discourage people from carrying large amount of money and other things. They also suggest estimating the amount of cash a person needs, or to avoid carrying cash at all. In fact keeping large amounts of money in your house is also avoidable. Besides, calling the police as soon as possible if a theft has occured.
