They wanted to turn heads on Texas highways, but their creativity hit a bureaucratic roadblock. Over 2,300 Texans saw their cheeky and controversial personalized license plate requests rejected by the state's Department of Motor Vehicles last year.
Among the submissions deemed too risqué for the road were more than 80 nods to the viral sensation "Hawk Tuah" girl, along with tributes to OnlyFans models and puzzling entries like "SKIBIDV" and "TXMAYOR."
Despite the rejections, a TikToker flaunted a Texas "Hawk Tuah" license plate. In a video posted last year, he calls the plate "hilarious" while detailing the Porsche. It's unclear whether this was a DMV oversight or just a stunt by the account.
The state also rejected plates like "M3NAC3," "R3DNCK," and "SHEDVL." Most of the submissions were so explicit, they couldn't make it on TV or into the article, local news said.
Getting a vanity plate in Texas isn't as simple as it sounds. The TxDMV carefully reviews submissions and can reject any that are indecent, vulgar, or potentially offensive.
Patterns that reference illegal activities, drugs, violence, or even numbers like "69" are also a no-go unless they meet specific exceptions.
Personalized plates in the state come with an $85 yearly fee.
