At least two people were killed and five others were injured after a drive-by shooter opened fire on a family barbecue late Saturday, June 18, San Antonio police said.
The shooting happened around 10:13 p.m. in the 2500 block of Patron Drive in San Antonio, police said.
"The family was barbecuing out in front of the house," San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said at a news conference early Sunday.
The deceased victims were both males, ages 45 and 46.
Among the injured victims - ages ranging from 20-to-mid 40s - two were females, McManus said. Identities of the victims were not released at the time of this writing.
"About 20 to 30 rounds" were unloaded on the family from a dark-colored SUV, McManus added.
"There were six children inside the house that were uninjured," McManus said. "They weren’t out front."
Authorities did not have any description of the possible suspect or suspects. The identity of the vehicle used was also unknown.
Neighbors, who didn’t want to be identified, say they initially thought the gunshot sounds they heard were fireworks.
"I told my husband, was that fireworks? He goes, ‘no, that was a gun.’ There was some gunshots," one woman, who lives down the street, told KSAT.
"Yeah, like it sounds like fireworks because none of that ever happens here," a young man told the outlet.
“You’re, you’re not safe anywhere, you know, not even at church. Not even at school. So it’s getting bad. It’s getting worse,” another woman said.
“I still hear the little girl screaming. She was just screaming. And I could hear a lady screaming. And I mean, it was, it was like a nightmare,” another neighbor said.
A possible motive behind the crime remains unclear at this time, but investigators said they have "a couple of theories." A further probe is underway.
About 15 minutes after the shooting, another drive-by shooting was reported less than two miles away in the 9200 block of S. Zarzamora Street.
Although it isn’t immediately clear whether the two shootings are related, the description of the vehicle matched, police said.
Someone in a dark-colored SUV reportedly fired about 30 shots at three vehicles parked in front of a Circle K, police said.
No one was injured.
